If you have never bet on a horse in your life, start here. It takes about two minutes and then the card makes sense.
You start with a thousand dollars. A meeting is eight races. Before each one you pick a horse, choose how much to put on it, and watch. You can back more than one horse in the same race.
The number next to each horse is its price. It tells you what you get back.
5/1 pays five dollars for every one you stake, and you get your stake back too. Ten dollars on a 5/1 winner returns sixty.
1/2 pays fifty cents on the dollar. Ten dollars returns fifteen.
Small numbers mean the horse is expected to win. Big numbers mean it is not. The shortest price in a race is the favourite. The longest is the outsider. Favourites win about a third of the time.
Each one is easier than the one above it, so each one pays less. A horse at 8/1 to win might be 5/2 to place and 6/5 to show. You can have all three on the same horse if you want, or back four different horses to show and hope three of them run into the money.

Tracks change with the weather, and the change decides races. Rain does opposite things to different surfaces.
Today's ground is at the top of the card, next to the surface. Some horses love the mud and some hate it, and their record shows which.
Count the ones marked Leads. If three or four of them all want the front, they push each other along too fast and stop before the line, and a horse held up at the back runs past the lot of them. The line above the card counts them for you.
The prices come from the same record you have just learned to read. They are not always right.
